Lolita Blog Carnival: 3 Favorite Brands and Why

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

This week in the Lolita Blog Carnival, we've been asked to talk about our favorite brands and why we like them. I think the answer to this question is always heavily tied to what aesthetics define Lolita for each person individually, as well as how and in what context they wear Lolita fashion. Because everyone has different tastes and different circumstances, we can see a variety of answers!

The particular aesthetic that most coincides with my personal feeling of being a Lolita is a sweet-classic feel. It's like tiptoeing the line between sweet and classic, where it is not too mature, but also still has a sense of elegance and demureness to it. While I adore looking at intricate prints, and I can appreciate the artwork that goes into them, a lot of my personal preference lies towards more solid-color designs or simpler floral and other all-over prints, rather than border prints. I also tend to prefer a more simplistic approach to accessories, partly because I prefer that look on myself, and also because I get irritated when I have too many objects hanging about me.

While I naturally tend towards a more toned-down aesthetic, the way I dress is also influenced by the fact that I consider Lolita to be part of my everyday wardrobe. While I do tend to go more elaborate for special occasions, meetups, conventions, etc., most of the time I'm wearing Lolita to do mundane things like running errands and going about the neighborhood or my apartment. Thus, I tend to put together my daily outfits with practicality (and sometimes speed of dressing) being primary factors.

With those things in mind, let's talk about my three favorite Lolita brands!

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

I am at heart always and forever an Innocent World girl, right from the beginning of my Lolita days. The brand aesthetic is exactly the balance of sweet and classic that I hold in my mind as my personal image of Lolita. My very first brand piece was a carousel print JSK from Innocent World, and it is still one of my favorite pieces.

I own a lot of pieces from Innocent World, and every one of them I would consider to be high quality. They use good fabrics with a nice feel and appropriate drape, and as far as I can tell the construction is solid. The printed pieces have crisp imaging, and I've yet to encounter any issues with running or color transfer.

Quality aside, what really draws me to this brand is the abundance of simple but elegant designs. Of course, as with any brand, they offer a range of very elaborate to more wearable pieces. But overall, they tend to have very clean and simple cuts with some frills and lace embellishments, but not so many as to be overwhelming. In general, I feel like their cuts and the shapes of their silhouettes tend to have a slightly more mature girly feel, which gives even their sweeter print designs still a feeling of elegance.

Much of my IW collection consists of solid designs rather than prints, but something that I really like about their prints is the "old fairytale book illustration" feeling that the artwork tends to have. It's not really so much sugary cute, as just rather charming and quaint. Illustrations along the lines of the original Beatrix Potter books, or Alice in Wonderland share that type of feeling.

The most representative piece of what I love about IW is the Viennese Waltz Frill JSK. The artwork is charmingly cute, but done in more muted colors that lend it a more mature feel. While high-waisted cuts can be childish, this particular shape retains a sense of elegance. The small frill details express a certain princessy or doll-like aesthetic, but are not so overly bold as to take away from the simplicity of the piece.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Baby's aesthetic tends towards the sweeter, more princessy side of the sweet-classic spectrum, but still captures the feeling I love. In particular, I am a fan of their non-print, floral and all-over print designs. My first Baby piece was the Blooming Snow White JSK.

While they do put out many print-focused pieces, especially more recently, they do a good job of balancing that with non-print designs and staple wardrobe pieces.

One thing that I especially like about their prints is that they often follow themes drawn from literature and fairytales. I always gravitate towards those subjects and find them very hard to resist. I am also fond of many of their older print designs, such as their Swan Lake print, Music Salon print, and their Alice and the Fawn print.

My signature piece from Baby is the Dessert OP. This is a design they've re-released almost yearly with minor variations in lace and details, and I would eventually like to have it in lavender, black, and pink as well. The design is cute and princess-liky, but not overly childish. The fabric is beautiful with a dot texture that adds interest, and the lace is beautiful and plush. It embodies my favorite aspects of Baby's non-print designs, in which complexity comes from details in the design (fabric, pintucks, lace, ruffles, layers, tiers), rather than elaborate prints.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

My third favorite brand is not strictly a Lolita brand. and as such most of their pieces are not designed with Lolita fashion in mind. In fact, they tend to distance themselves from Lolita, preferring to be labeled an otome brand. That said, because I do prefer something a bit simpler than some other Lolitas, quite a number of their pieces fit quite well in my personal Lolita aesthetic. Especially when practicality comes into play, and giant petticoats are not always appropriate, ETC dresses and skirts with a moderate petticoat fit in perfectly.

My favorite thing about ETC is their quirky prints, with sometimes unusual themes. Because they are not a Lolita brand, and don't really care to follow the goings-on in Lolita trends and such, they actually tend to stand out for me. For example, they don't usually line up with Lolita brands in terms of print themes, and the illustration style is also different. I would described it as part children's book, part old-timey fairytale. It shares that sort of antique charm that IW illustrations have, but usually brighter and more bold.

Another area where they stand out for me is with their really nice designs for wardrobe fillers and accessories. I always like their cardigan and cutsew designs, which would be perfect for everyday wearers in terms of comfort and being not too loud or outlandish. They also have very cute coats and hats, which I would very much like to own some of one day.

My favorite piece that I own from ETC is the Victoria Music OP. It has one of my favorite print themes, music! The artwork exemplifies the all-over prints they do, and the streamlined high-waist cut of the piece is one commonly seen in ETC's OPs and JSKs.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Of course I have pieces that I love from many other brands as well, but these three are my top three in terms of matching my own Lolita aesthetic as well as fitting into my wardrobe for wearing Lolita fashion on a daily basis.

[Outfit Post] Pippi Pink

I love that this print has so many colors in it, you can coordinate it with so many different things depending on what mood you're in. I think I was feeling a little bit Pippi-inspired myself that day, hence the polka dots. My socks do match, however, since I don't really think I can pull off the mismatched socks very well. All hail the awesome Pippi!

[Outfit Post] Reading the Leaves

One really wonderful thing about this skirt is that there are so many colors that it can really coordinate with just about any relatively plain top/sock/shoe combination. And because it's somewhat longer, it's great for wearing in the autumn and pairing with autumn colors, like this sage cardigan <3 data-blogger-escaped-br="">

[Outfit Post] Pippi Darkstocking

I absolutely love the aesthetic of a lot of Emily Temple Cute things, and this skirt is my very first piece from them. Hopefully this year I'll be able to find a regular shopping service and be able to buy more from them! Also, Pippi Longstocking is my hero <3

[Lolita Blog Carnival] 1 Piece, 4 Seasons

I joined the Lolita Blog Carnival quite awhile ago, but did not have sufficient time/inspiration to participate in posting until now. So this is my very first LBC post!

I love the idea of seeing how people use the same article of clothing in coordinations fit for a variety of weather conditions, especially as it is something that I often have to do myself. Funny enough, I was looking through old outfit snaps and realized I didn't really have a full-range season set for any main piece in my wardrobe. Maybe I tend to wear certain pieces at only certain times of year!

As it turns out, my trusty Emily Temple Cute Pippi Longstocking print skirt was the winner - the one piece I wear year-round! Given how much I love this skirt, that's no wonder at all ^_^

Spring

Shirt: JCPenney's
Socks: Sockdreams
Necklace: Chocomint

The print itself is perfectly fit for spring - what better to do than read books under blooming trees? In Chicago, it's actually still pretty chilly in the spring, but not cold enough to warrant many layers. Spring always makes me feel more pastel, so pairing the skirt with a light blue turtleneck and long socks was perfect. A birdcage necklace finishes it off to add a point of interest on top.

Summer

Shirt/Socks: Target
Brooch/Hairbow: Lemontree11

For summer, I stuck with emphasizing the blue bits in the print, as I don't often wear yellow/green (not entirely flattering with my skintone). It gets pretty oppressive in the summer here, so short sleeves, short socks, and hair up were definitely a must. The adorable bunny brooch I got from Lemontree11 fits in perfectly with the whimsy of the print and adds a nice touch to a very plain shirt.

Autumn

T-shirt/Cardigan/Tights: Target
Shoes: StrideRite

Sage green is a color that I associate very much with autumn, especially when paired with brown, hence the t-shirt and tights in this outfit. The weather becomes cool fairly quickly, so cardigans and layers really come in handy (not to mention, I just really love cardigans).

Winter

Cardigan/Tights: Target
Boots: Sugar

For winter, I usually turn to darker colors. I decided to use black to coordinate with the rickrack trim on the skirt hem. I love stompy boots with Lolita outfits, and I especially love these particular ones (I have them in two other colors as well). Not only are they conveniently waterproof, the floral pattern adds a touch of fun to the outfit, which goes well with the idea of Pippi Longstocking.
All of these outfits are on the simple/casual side for Lolita, bordering onto otome. It makes sense that ETC is a brand that caters more to otome style, plus I wear these outfits on a daily basis and thus wearability is a big factor in how I create outfits. I hope you enjoyed looking at my cross-season coordination of this skirt as much as I enjoyed wearing it year-round!

Ever since classes ended and it got ridiculously hot and humid, I've been hibernating in my apartment with 3 fans and a dehumidifier, so I haven't really been dressing up or going out much XD But here's a couple of outfits from the last month or so :-P

[Lolita Challenge] Day 5 – 10 items from your wishlist

Ooh! Ooh! This is a fun one ^_^

1. Metamorphose ~ Telephone JSK (Denim)

This is one of my ultimate most-wanted items. Unfortunately, it's quite old and very hard to find, and I'm apparently always too slow to hop on it when it does show up once in a blue moon T_T

2. Angelic Pretty ~ Fancy Melody JSK or SK (Black)

Another old and rare item among my most-wanted. I'd be happy with either the JSK or the skirt.

3. Emily Temple Cute ~ Glitter Constellation JSK (Pink)

Among the slew of constellation prints that have come out recently, I think this is my favorite. Unfortunately, I don't have the funds to buy it right now, and given that it's ETC, I'll probably have a hard time finding it second-hand by the time I do have money for it XD

4. Baby the Stars Shine Bright ~ Sleeping Beauty SK (Navy)

I want this to add to my fairytale theme collection.

5. Angelic Pretty ~ Dreamy Dollhouse Salopette (Lavender)

While I'm not particularly fond of toy prints, I do find this one really cute, and especially, I looooove the design of the salopette. I tried stalking mbok/yahoo for awhile, and it popped up a few times but it was always the wrong color or I got outbid T_T

6. Baby the Stars Shine Bright ~ Leatitia Raseine JSK (Mint)

One of the prettiest floral-print dresses, in my opinion. I don't anticipate being able to find it easily though. However, I think my favorite part is really just the design, so I could probably make something similar myself ^_^

7. Angelic Pretty ~ Rose Toilette SK (Mint)

This print is just very delicate-looking, especially in the mint colorway. But it's also one I don't see popping up often, especially in skirt form (skirts seem to be resold less frequently in general).

8. Emily Temple Cute ~ Swan Print JSK (Grey)

One of ETC's newer prints, I'm hoping I'll be able to find it second-hand. Because swans are awesome ^_^

9. Angelic Pretty ~ Tiara Rose SK (Lavender or sax)

I'd prefer the lavender colorway, but sax is pretty too. I love this print, and while I'm not crazy about the JSK design, I would love it as a skirt.

10. Innocent World ~ Alphabet Rose JSK (Pink)

I'm not sure if I prefer the short or the long version, actually, since both are really beautiful in their own ways. Either way, I really love the simplicity of the design combined with the delicateness of the print.

[Outfit Post] 2/13 ~ 2/29

I've been lax both about taking outfit snaps and about posting, unfortunately. Part of that is due to my main laptop going into a sudden decline... Luckily I've gotten a new netbook to tide me over until I can get a real updated laptop next year!

So here's all the snaps I managed to take for the 2nd half of February:

[Outfit Post] Paris + London

Long hiatus was long... I didn't mean for it to be, but I've been lazy about posting T_T  End of quarter + Europe trip franticness = frazzled Kyttyee.

In any case, I recently got back from a trip to Paris and London.  And it was such a lovely trip, I kind of want to still be in Paris.  In any case, I discovered that my French abilities are still vaguely functional, and probably better than I think they are (yay lack of confidence).  In any case, I had a lot of fun over the Atlantic and met some great new people (and old acquaintances). ^_^  If only I'd thought ahead to meetup with my Sekai no Melody girls, but oh well >_<

My goal was to pack light, and I apparently managed to do 9 days worth of outfits all in my little carry-on-sized rollaway.  Which incidentally is now broken, and I had to get a new one just a few days ago T_T  But yes, all in one small suitcase, with room to spare (good thing too, since I ended up doing a bit of shopping).  My strategy was to pack 3 JSK/SK and then a bunch of shirts, tights/socks, and accessories to mix and match.  Plus one cardigan and one light jacket.  And one (yes, only one) pair of shoes that were comfortable for walking, but also dressy enough in case I went to a fancier venue.  I ended up bringing my ETC Victoria Print JSK, Metamorphose Music Notes JSK, and my new BTSSB Fairy Night skirt.  And then some shirts and my random pink shift for my traveling/rough-and-tumble clothes ^o^

Here's an outfit dump, sort of.  I didn't bother taking real outfit shots, nor do I have one from every day, but you can sort of get the idea.

These were my airplane clothes...

Catacombs day.  Didn't want to risk messing up nice clothes.

It was soooo hot in Paris for the first four or so days, so I basically stuck to wearing ankle socks rather than tights.  The last day, when we went to Versailles, was the only really nice day (in my opinion).  I apparently have a different definition of "nice" than most Parisians? Or at least than our host?  The only day I actually wore a petti was when I wore the BTSSB skirt, because it kind of needs it to not look weird XD

I didn't actually do that much shopping in Paris, and even in London most of the things I bought were little  souvenir gifts for other people, or stuffed animals.  Haha yes... stuffed animals >_>;;  I did buy an amazingly cute pair of shoes from the Galleries Lafayette though!  They're made by Geox, and they're just so dainty.  I think I'm sold on European shoes, all the ones in the shoe department were just so dainty and nice, almost like wearing dance slippers or something.  And they're not at all flimsy, they're perfectly sturdy and even have sufficient padding/support on the insides. They're just not clunky!  I love my Stride Rite shoes, and they're cute in their own right, but really, the new Geox shoes just totally crush them in daintiness XD  I need more European shoes!!  Also, they're pink and have flowers on them :-D

Anyways, that's the fashion-related portion of my trip!  The next posts will focus more on the actual places I went and saw, and of course there will be pictures ^o^
