Finding the Ocarina of Time

I've always felt like wind instruments have a certain old-fashioned charm to them that fills my yearning for woodland and fairy beauty. Ocarinas especially capture my imagination, with their airy almost ethereal sound and their unusual rustic-looking shapes. Of course, now you can get ocarinas in all sorts of interesting and modern designs, but I think I still associate them most strongly with mostly round and gourd-like forms.



I have had my ocarina for a while, but never really spent enough time learning to play it beyond just fiddling around once in a blue moon. I finally decided to buy a couple of simple songbooks for it so I can more easily get comfortable playing actual songs, instead of just twittering around blindly. I'm especially enjoying the "Anime" one because it turns out to exclusively contain songs from Studio Ghibli films, which I adore.

I've decided to challenge myself to record more songs, and I thought trying "quick and dirty" recordings might help. It'll also be good for me to learn that things don't always have to be perfect to be good. These will have minimal editing, probably just a single take with instrumental playing lightly in the background. But they're a lot less stressful to make and I might even be able to make myself make them more frequently!

I'm also going to try to continue doing all of the artwork for my videos myself now ^_^

I adore this song so much, the lyrics are really touching but it is also musically soothing, which I think makes for a wonderful ballad combination. I hope you enjoy it too!

Cover ~ Aoi Teshima/Tales from Earthsea "Teru no Uta"

I've always found the music in Studio Ghibli movies to be among the best soundtracks I've heard, and Tales from Earthsea did not disappoint. "Teru no Uta" is absolutely beautiful in its simplicity, particularly when pared down to a single piano accompaniment. I cannot ever hope to match Aoi Teshima's beautiful rendition, but the song moved me so much I was compelled to make my own cover of it. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Cover ~ AKB48/Team Surprise "Suiyoubi no Alice"

This song and its corresponding official MV are just too cute. I'm sure the fact they're all wearing exactly my sort of fashion helps. As I was listening to it, a video idea just popped up in my head, so I decided to try and make it! My living space is not ideal for this, but it worked reasonably enough. All the choreography is my own, although the necklace bit was inspired by the original video.

I originally did my usual karaoke-style cover for this song, but Youtube picked it out for muting. So I decided I would accept the challenge of actually playing my own backing track. The instrumental was a challenge to make, since it involved figuring out by ear how to play all the parts myself. It's simpler than the original instrumental, but given that it's my first time attempting this sort of thing, I'm reasonably pleased with it. It has separate piano, strings, and bass sounds (all played on an electronic keyboard). With more practice, I might even get better at learning things by ear!

This song (and this genre of songs in general) is really terrible for my voice type, but I adore this anime and all of the music in it!! Plus, this is a really inspiring song, especially for people going through the struggles of finding themselves and figuring out what they want to do in life. I've done one English adaptation of it before a long time ago, but I decided I wanted to refine the lyrics and re-record a new version for this channel! [NaSoAlMo 2013] Week 2 Progress

Unfortunately, there's been far less progress this week. Just a few more musical bits and pieces, a possible chord progression, and a wispy idea for another song.

Two weeks into NaSoAlMo, I have:

- Full lyrics draft for 2.5 songs
- Theme snippet for 1 song
- Larger theme motif + piece layout for a trio
- General instrumentation/motifs for a duet

I have no idea if this is much or little progress, but it's something, and it's way more than I've ever gotten in previous "attempts" at NaSoAlMo, so I'll try to be satisfied and just keep pushing on ^_^
